The 40-cm (16-inch) Meade LX200 telescope at York is used primarily for teaching and public outreach.
The small white telescope mounted on top is protected by a solar filter, and is used for the first-year students' solar observing project in conjunction with the monitor screen on the desk. The very small black telescope beside the solar scope is the finder, a wide-field instrument for use in aiming the telescope manually.
The orange pad at the top connects the dome's shutter to electricity; the dome must be pointing south in order to move the shutter. Once the shutter is open, the dome can be turned to observe any part of the sky.
